Granex is a regenerative supercritical power cycle for electricity generation from low-grade heat sources (e.g. geothermal, industrial waste heat, etc). It is a novel technology that is more efficient and cost- effective than conventional technologies, inherently simple and applicable to a wide range of low-grade heat sources. The heat-exchange technology achieves extra efficiency from using steam and specialised fluids, but does not convert steam back to water.

By combining the concepts of heat regeneration and supercritical Rankine[1] cycle into a unified process, Granex improves the thermal efficiency of the cycle and increases the net electrical output which can be recovered from a given low-grade heat source. The regeneration of thermal energy in Granex is achieved through a novel heat regenerator invented and patented by Prof Moghtaderi and Dr Doroodchi.[2]

Granex is a technology platform developed initially for geothermal power generation. A University of Newcastle study has found that GRANEX can deliver a 40% improvement in both thermal efficiency and power generation. The technology delivers higher thermal efficiencies than conventional power plants and increases the amount of electricity that can be generated from low-grade heat sources such as geothermal and industrial waste heat.

[edit] About the Inventor

Professor Behdad Moghtaderi and Dr Elham Doroodchi are a husband and wife team who work at the University of Newcastle’s Priority Research Centre for Energy. They are both chemical engineers.
