Introduction

Living in a severe cold climate the neolithic people of the present day Orkney islands developed buildings using a technology that is again being developed for a low carbon future.

Design Principles

Earth is used as thermal mass - a substantial proportion of home is below ground. Heat loss minimized by using tunnels between separate dwellings
