Living in a severe cold climate the neolithic people of the present day Orkney islands developed buildings using a technology that is again being developed for a low carbon future.

Design Principles

- compare with recent Lapland house and modern earth-berm design

Minimal surface area exposed to elements (round -- lowest surface to volume ratio). Earth is used as thermal mass - a substantial proportion of home is below ground. Heat loss minimized by using tunnels between separate dwellings. Local materials.
